When I prepared for a theatre play about Alma Mahler, someone recommended the book Witwe im Wahn ( Hilmes, 2010) to me.
I delved into another era and a destiny of a woman accused of being superficial and who herself thought that women can't be geniouses. Maybe that is the reason why she had relationships with all these talented men be it Mahler, Zemlinsky, Kokoschka or Gropius.
But when I sing her lieder superficiality doesn't come to my mind. Instead it is darkness, passion, integrity and frustration plus a charm and musicality that make these lieder wonderful to perform.
Hear me and Taavi Oramo talk about the concert at Vaasa City Hall in the video.
